about

Decon's commentary:

Short, but sweet; in and and out in just the right amount of time it needs to be, I feel. The original version of the track was more directly inspired by Sonic CD's Japanese/European soundtrack, but here I was shooting for something that could match Sonic Mania's musical style and direction- something that both benefited from and was a consequence of my self imposed “only program assets/features can be used for the composition process” challenge for the album as a whole. That did present an additional challenge when it came to this this song, though- was I gonna just use what scant few stab/chord samples M2K has for the “ravey” breakdown at 1:36, or was I gonna try and “build” my own stab sample? Turns out the answer was “a little of both”, though how well I pulled that off is down to the listener. Whilst I'm being critical; partially due to my choice to pan layers of it across channels, you lose the chords backing the freeform-y melody at the section starting around 1:08 to the mix a bit; you can hear they're there, but it's hard to parse out what notes they're actually playing or what the sequence even is- the reverb isn't helping (too much of it, too strong). The guitar loop sample kind of has the same problem, in addition. It's only really the bassline and the melody itself that really indicates the progression of chords there, and I'm still a little bit mad at myself for not realising that until it was too late to fix. Ironically, because that melody is so strong, and it pairs so nicely with that bassline, it's actually my favourite part of the song- and is a big factor in why it was shortlisted for this best of. Funny how that works.
