IN-CHARACTER TRACK COMMENTARY FROM GONKAKA:

Denji Koshiro: This might surprise some readers, but initially, the plan was to use just one version of this song for use in the game- the fuller version. I had completely written the song out, but during the early mixing process, I heard the sampled breakbeats, scratch sample, and the tom drum 'backup bass' + 808 cowbell chord together and thought “hey, even this sounds really good!”, and convinced Suda to let me include that version in the game to some capacity.

Shinji Namiki: The groove in both versions is very infectious, I admit; it is very difficult not to nod your head along to.

Fumie Saso: Did you know that some fans have sampled the dub version and looped it as backing tracks for rap battles, Denji?

Denji Koshiro: I did! There's this one video out there of two guys trading absolutely vicious verses, really cutting stuff, but they're doing it with smiles on their faces and the crowd around them is getting really into it; I feel really proud that what was effectively a happy accident could've led to that.

DECON'S TRACK COMMENTARY:

Both versions of Epitaph- and the fact there even are two versions, one more stripped down then the other- are inspired by how both Capcom vs. SNK games handle their Continue and Name Entry themes (though they're more specifically inspired by the ones from the first game).

contain samples from; 19/2000 by Gorillaz, Put the Needle to the Record by The Criminal Element Orchestra, and Weapon of Choice (Instrumental ver.) by Fatboy Slim.
