One thing I think is worth noting is that this demo- and indeed most of the sketches included here- give the best idea how most of my musical ideas start. I very, very rarely go into songs with concrete plans, so they tend to form “in the studio” from either very vague ideas or, more or less, from flippin’ Cloud 9. On the one hand, this allows for a certain level of fluidity, and a freeform workflow that allows for change of ideas on the fly without causing too much of a ballache. On the other, it often means the basic elements I lay in are the only impression of any idea I have to go on, and that can often lead to me making calls like “this sounds boring and is doing nothing for me”, and scrapping any work I may have done up to that point. I bring that up because, some slight refinement aside, there’s not a lot of difference between this demo and Acid Jazz; they’re slow builds with not much going on but some changing synth bass patches and a beat that constructs itself every few measures. Yet somehow, I came to the conclusion Acid Jazz was “boring and going nowhere”, but stuck out with this and made one of my favourite pieces on the album.

I’ve no real profound point or bombshell to drop here, I’m just offering some insight into my work process and the way I assess my own work “in the zone” as it were. Make of it what you will.
