Track 16: The Devil's Nearest Neighbours (Boss Battle) [from "K-TYPE (Gramophonic 4HD Version)"]
Artist: Shinji Namiki
Originally Composed: 2011

I think this song marked the first time I ever tried to emulate that mid 90s redbook audio sound that I love so much. It's certainly the earliest example I can think of, at any rate, and it's definitely one of the earliest times I tried doing a song that had overtly rock-ish elements to it. It's an older piece, so of course it's very far from perfect, but four years on I'm still very impressed with this track. The guitar sample sounds a bit weedy and there definitely needed to be more tom drums in the fills, but the melodies and chords are very strong, I'm very happy with the synth sounds across the whole piece, the overall arrangement is pretty good, and little things like the sound effect work in the intro (including the phase effects on the drums), and the chopping work on the vocal samples are all really nice little touches. In many ways, I feel the remake of this song I did for Battlemania (103records.Bandcamp.com/track/the-devils-nearest-neighbors-heavens-finest-fallen-mix-boss-battle) is actually the worse of the two versions of this song, just by virtue of the fact it isn't quite as tightly put together as the original is. Of course, that just means the inevitable third go around needs to be better then both of them.

Trivia Note: The game parody in the title is actually one of the easier ones to get, directly referencing R-TYPE. The console parody is a little bit more oblique, referencing the Panasonic 3DO console.
