Track 19: Goodnight, Poor Soul (Bad Ending) [from "Slumber Early Works"]
Artist: Takayuki Mitsuyoshi
Originally Composed: 2011(?)

This was originally composed for an old Yume Nikki inspired project called Eternal Slumber, which focused on a boy named Anthony, and his attempts to escape a strange, bizarre dream world to get back home; a world that may, or may not, have been a reflection of the “real world” and the various things Anthony had to face in it. Rudimentary ideas got tossed around a fair bit back in 2009 and 2010, but not much ever really came of the project in the end outside of the odd song here and there. This was, as the title shows, supposed to be the tune that played if you achieved the “bad” ending, which as this is a game about dreams and dream worlds you can probably imagine the contents of. In construction, the songs pretty solid; vaguely trip hop esque, nice and ethereal, and a little bit melancholic. I still quite like the shift between relatively sedate and restrained to going all out with a wailing guitar and a heavier, more complex, tom drum heavy beat, and that weird tweaky synth riff has a certain charm to it, and for the time the song is made, is actually quite a complex addition on my part. Although, I’m kicking myself for using such a hissy, “light” snare for the main beat, as it just doesn’t work very well, and the lack of basslines throughout a majority of the song- an issue that comes up a lot more the further you go back- hurts the song overall.
