He removes his glove.

The speakers crackle to life

around the roof,

through the building’s interior, where Balance hears them kick on;

activating the speakers of the buildings next door in every direction

and the speakers in the buildings next to them,

the ones next to them,

even the speakers lining the streets,

reaching Pollex’s building, where the man in white winces,

and Fade’s room where her heart sinks before her fingers fly to her console, trying to shut them off but can’t override Bass’ programming,

until a bubble of three miles’ worth of speakers come to life.

And wait

as he reaches out to Jeeve’s guitar.

His fingers curl around the neck and pick it up.

The anger on his face fades

but blooms in his now burning azure eyes.
